Opportunity classes (OCs) provide academically gifted students with a challenging and enriched learning environment during Years 5 and 6. Entry into these classes is based on the Opportunity Class Placement Test, usually taken in Year 4.
Here’s everything NSW parents need to know for the 2026 OC intake, including official dates, application details, test format, and tips to help your child prepare.
Opportunity classes are specialised classes for high-achieving students in NSW public primary schools. There are currently 77 schools offering OC programmes, along with Aurora College, which provides a virtual OC for rural and remote students.
Each class accepts a limited number of students — typically 15–30 per year level — making the process highly competitive. Around 12,000–13,000 Year 4 students apply each year for approximately 1,840 available places.
As with selective schools, up to 20% of OC places are set aside under the Equity Placement Model for eligible students from under-represented backgrounds.
From 2025, the OC test became fully computer-based. It consists of three multiple-choice sections:
Reading – 30 mins: comprehension and interpretation of texts
Mathematical Reasoning – 40 mins: numerical problem-solving and applied reasoning
Thinking Skills – 30 mins: logic puzzles and critical thinking
The test is designed for Year 4 level ability, though some questions may challenge beyond that. There is no writing component.
Parents can choose up to four OC schools in order of preference. Students receive only one initial offer — the highest school for which they qualify — and may also be placed on reserve lists for higher preferences.
Reserve lists remain open until 1 December 2025. OC placement is for Years 5 and 6 only. After completing Year 6, students must apply separately for the selective high school test.
As with the selective test, appeals can be lodged if your child’s test performance was affected by extraordinary circumstances not previously addressed.
Valid grounds include illness or procedural issues at the test centre, with clear supporting evidence. Invalid grounds include general dissatisfaction or assumptions about cut-off marks.
Appeals must be lodged through the Department’s portal by 12 September 2025 and include all relevant documentation.
1. Start early and keep it light.
2. Use official online practice tests from the Department to build familiarity.
3. Strengthen core skills: daily reading, maths reasoning, and logical games.
4. Teach time management under timed conditions.
5. Maintain wellbeing and confidence with regular rest and encouragement.
While Test Academy does not yet offer a dedicated OC preparation class, our FlexiClass programme is ideal for Year 3–4 students preparing for the OC test.
FlexiClass provides one-on-one or small group tutoring tailored to each student’s needs, focusing on Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Thinking Skills. These sessions also serve as excellent preparation for the Selective Test later on.
The OC and Selective placement processes can be demanding, but they’re also opportunities for children to stretch their potential. Regardless of the outcome, every NSW public school supports high potential students through enrichment opportunities.
At Test Academy, we’re here to help — from FlexiClass for OC students to Selective Test Mastery for Year 6 learners. Start early, stay informed, and keep learning fun — that’s the key to success.
